Perhaps you can remember making cakes at home as a child but just cannot find the time for homebaking these days? Well, let me encourage you to get back into baking homemade cakes.

It doesn’t take that long to bake a wonderful homemade cake from a recipe!

A few words from the original Woman’s Institute Library of Cookery:

“Foods of this class, which are usually served as dessert, are for the most part considered as luxuries and, of course, are not used so extensively in the diet as other classes of foods. However, sweet food is required to a certain extent in each person’s diet, and it may be obtained in this agreeable form without overbalancing the food account if a little economy is practiced elsewhere. Thus, a small quantity of cake or pudding that is light, not too rich, and properly made may be served without injury to most persons as a dessert or as an accompaniment to a dessert.”

So there you have it! A little cake is unlikely to do you harm, which is one of the reasons why I always make a Christmas cake, even if it’s at the last minute because little can compare with the fun of mixing ingredients, the excitement of opening the oven door and the wonderful, enticing aroma of freshly baked cake as it is taken from the oven. Or what about a “gooey” chocolate cake for comfort when life is getting a bit too much?

I hope this guide to all sorts of homemade cake recipes helps everybody to enjoy cakemaking. There are already hundreds of recipe sites, but many of them seem to be jumbled and difficult to navigate – Have you tried choosing from over 5,000 recipes? So my aim is to keep this site simple and dedicated to cakes … and maybe a few cookies and other desserts.

You will eventually find some recipes for gluten free and dairy free cakes as well as the more regular Christmas cake recipes, chocolate cake recipes, rum cake recipes, birthday cake recipes, cheesecake recipes and some of the more unusual recipes for cakes from around the world. But don’t expect any of the cake recipes to use cake mixes – all the homemade cake recipes use basic ingredients so you know exactly what you are using to make wholesome, comforting and enjoyable cakes.

The selection of homemade cake recipes will hopefully not be overwhelming – just enough to give you some choice without spending hours trying to choose from thousands of recipes.
